Wall of Wonder with Nobumasa Takahashi

This participatory storytelling project maps the past, present and imagined future of any local area through art! Japanese artist Nobumasa Takahashi transforms blank walls into sprawling, ‘Japanese graffiti’ style contemporary artworks, perfect for mass public engagement.

All-ages participants can throw out their ideas and watch them come to life as he draws at break-neck speed. Children and adults can also book facilitated storytelling workshops.

Nobumasa intensely researches his locations before turning his curiosity to the stories of local people. Always maintaining his ‘outsider’ viewpoint, he is attuned to the unseen, mythical inhabitants of our streetscapes.

The final work is a mesmerising blend of fact and fantasy drawn from local imagination: a wall of wonder.

“Spontaneous audience participation can be nerve-wracking, but Nobumasa adeptly wove multiple story threads into a show-stopping, personalised public artwork that transcended graffiti status. The visual impact of his work attracted people so easily – we surpassed our audience expectations by a mile – as large crowds, both passing by and specifically there for the artwork, could easily participate. The result was a mural with community ownership and many repeat visits for one more photo!”

 - Annie Tennant,

Former General Manager, Sustainability & Culture, Barangaroo South, Lendlease / commissioner ‘Art Ninjas’ with Nobumasa Takahashi

Wall of Wonder is an ingeniously simple yet meaningful participatory art experience, perfect for anyone who wants to program a low-maintenance, personalised, and participatory art and storytelling experience.”

- Frank Newman,

Sydney Opera House / Director ‘Join the Dots’ with Nobumasa Takahashi

“Takahashi engaged with children of all ages to contribute to his artwork… which transformed a wall of black construction hoarding at the northern end of Wulugul Walk into a street art masterpiece.”
