Our Brief
After a sell-out tour in 2017, ArtsPeople’s Director Kathryn Hunyor was again asked to curate and lead an 8-day cultural tour of Japan focusing on contemporary art, architecture and design as part of the Art Gallery of NSW Society’s World Art Tours. AGNSW Society wanted a fresh and contemporary approach to touring Japan that appealed to their well-travelled and well-informed membership.

The Project
This ‘week-long public program’ included curated walking tours, gallery visits, themed lectures & special guests. The four days in Tokyo included ‘Japanese Design Reborn’ from Marunouchi to Ginza, ‘The Art of Living’ in Roppongi, ‘The City as Museum’ in Omotesando & Aoyama, and ‘Kenzo Tange’s Tokyo’ & the new Yayoi Kusama Museum in Shinjuku. The second four days immersed our visitors in Japanese & international contemporary art & architecture by Tadao Ando, Rei Naito, Ryue Nishizawa, Kazuo Sejima, Yukinori Yanagi, Lee Ufan, Yoshihiro Suda, James Turrell and many others, scattered across the Seto Inland Sea ‘art islands’ of Naoshima, Teshima & Inujima.
