𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗬: The art of living (and dying) in Japan
The cycle of life has always been a vital element in Japanese art and design.

This Saturday 8 February 2-3pm at the Art Gallery of NSW, I’ll be exploring this theme in my talk ‘The art of living (and dying) in Japan’.
We’ll look at the works of important artists – post-war avant-garde and contemporary – who’ve found their inspiration in the key stages of life.
Drawing on my personal observations of Japan, we’ll see how artists and art movements are expanding and challenging established views of Japanese history, society and culture.

Keen to enhance your appreciation of Japanese culture, art and religion? Curious about Zen and Shinto; minimalism and ‘ma’; ikebana and the avant-garde?

Why not come on an immersive, curated tour of Japan that I’ll be leading in May this year, as part of the Art Gallery of NSW’s new International Study Tours program.

‘Zen, minimalism and the Japanese avant-garde’ will see us meditating in Kamakura, where Zen Buddhism flourished in the 12th century; flower-arranging in one of Tokyo’s most important Ikebana schools; exploring the unique Japanese idea of ‘ma’ (space) in Kanazawa, a centre of culture from the 17th century to the present; and for the finale at Naoshima, one of Japan’s gorgeous ‘art islands’, checking our intuitive, aesthetic pulse at the Lee Ufan Museum.

Together we’ll discover how Zen influences Japanese aesthetics, connecting past and present through time, space and material. We’ll explore how contemporary Japanese art and architecture derive their pure forms from the traditions of meditation, tea ceremony and calligraphy; and learn how 20th century artists blended Eastern and Western philosophical and religious ideas to create groundbreaking works amid a tumultuous post-war Japan.

For a deeper awareness of how natural landscapes, spiritual landmarks and the practice of Zen combine to create the unique Japanese aesthetic, I’d love you to join me for ten wonderful days this spring in Japan.
